Choose which fields the names write to
A template is what turns an approved name into a caption. You arm the IPTC fields you want written, drop tokens into them, and the tokens resolve per photo when the file is written. Open it with the Metadata button in the gallery toolbar, or right-click a photo and choose Edit metadata….
Arm the fields you want
A field is written only when it is armed. Tick the box at the left of a row, or type into the row and it arms itself. The footer keeps a running count, reading something like 3 fields armed · applying to 412 photos.
Set, Add and Fill

In Add mode you also choose At end or At start. A template that resolves to nothing for a photo is skipped for that photo, so an empty token never wipes what is already there.
How many photos it touches
The header picks the scope: This photo, Selected or Entire gallery, each showing its count. The button then reads Apply to 412 photos so the number is in front of you before you press it.
Persons Shown is never overwritten
The Persons Shown row carries a KEEP badge and has no checkbox, because MatchID owns that field. Approve or remove a face to change it. The names are still available to other fields through the person tokens, so you can copy them into a caption without the template being able to damage the original.
Tokens
The Insert token rail inserts into whichever field you clicked into last. Values resolve per photo, so the same template covers a whole gallery. A token that resolves to nothing disappears rather than leaving a {brace} in someone's metadata.
One token is worth knowing on its own. {long2|person_name} is a single token with a pipe in it, meaning “the long form, or the plain name if there is no team”. The first half that resolves wins.
The Preview tab resolves your armed rows against a real photo from the gallery, using the same resolver that runs when the file is written. It shows the resolved template rather than the merged result, so an Add row previews as the new text on its own.
Where the template is saved
Save these fields to offers three homes. Template is a named copy your team can seed from. Folder makes it the folder's mapping, which everything inside inherits. Gallery overrides the folder for one gallery.

After you press Apply
The database updates first and the files are rewritten behind it, so the editor closes and tells you it is working. If the file rewrite fails you get Downloads may lag, which means the gallery shows the new values while a download still carries the old ones. Nothing is lost; the files catch up on the next run.
